Melon Day originated in Turkmenistan in 1994, established by the country’s first president, Saparmurat Niyazov, who was also known as Turkmenbashi, meaning “Leader of the Turkmens. The day was created to honour the Turkmenbashi melon, a prized variety of muskmelon known for its large size, sweet taste, and aromatic qualities. Turkmenistan, located in Central Asia, has a rich history of melon cultivation, with over 400 varieties of melons grown in the country1.
