Jyapu Diwas

Jyapu Diwas, or National Jyapu Day, honours the Jyapu farming community of the Kathmandu Valley and its contribution to Newar culture, agriculture, food traditions, music, and community life.

The observance is celebrated with Yomari Punhi on the full-moon day of the Newar month Thinla, corresponding to Mangsir Purnima in the Nepali calendar. Its Gregorian date therefore changes each year. In 2024, the 21st National Jyapu Day was celebrated on December 15.

Public celebrations commonly include cultural processions in Kathmandu, traditional Newar music and dress, recognition of farmers and cultural contributors, and the preparation of yomari from newly harvested rice. The occasion connects respect for agricultural labour with the preservation of the Kathmandu Valley’s living Newar heritage.

Jyapu Diwas should not be confused with Japji Sahib, the Sikh prayer composed by Guru Nanak. The similar English spellings refer to unrelated traditions.
